Bed Bug Treatment
How Do Bed Bugs Spread Between Rooms Or Units?
Bed bugs can't fly and don't jump, but they're very good hitchhikers — which is exactly how a problem in one bedroom ends up in a hallway closet, or how one apartment unit's infestation reaches the unit next door.
Moving room to room within a home
- Along shared walls, baseboards, and wiring gaps. Bed bugs travel through small cracks and openings that connect adjoining rooms.
- On items people carry between rooms. Laundry baskets, bags, and even books or electronics can carry bed bugs from an infested bedroom into a living room or another bedroom.
- Through shared furniture. Moving a chair, lamp, or box from an infested room without checking it first is a common way an infestation spreads within a single home.
Moving between apartment units
In multi-unit buildings, bed bugs spread between units through wall voids, electrical outlets, and shared plumbing chases — especially in older Portland buildings with less-sealed construction. They also move along hallways on shared items like vacuum cleaners, or when infested furniture is left in a hallway or dumpster area where it gets touched by other residents.
Why waiting makes it worse
The longer bed bugs go untreated in one room or unit, the more chances they have to spread through these paths. This is part of why catching it early matters, and why apartment buildings often need to coordinate treatment across adjoining units rather than treating just one.
Slowing the spread while you wait for treatment
Avoid moving furniture, bedding, or boxes out of an affected room until it's been treated. Bag and seal items that need to leave the room. If you're in a shared building, let building management know early — treating just one unit while an adjoining unit still has bed bugs usually means the problem comes right back.
