Bed Bug Treatment
How Do You Know If You Have Bed Bugs?
Bed bugs are small, good at hiding, and often go unnoticed until an infestation has already spread beyond a single room. If you're in Portland and suspect a problem, here are the signs that actually mean something, versus the ones that get mistaken for bed bugs.
Physical signs on your mattress and bedding
- Small reddish-brown stains on sheets or the mattress seam — often from a bed bug being crushed after feeding.
- Tiny dark spots along seams, tags, or piping — this is fecal matter and tends to cluster in the same spots repeatedly.
- Shed skins — bed bugs molt several times as they mature, leaving pale, empty exoskeletons behind.
- A musty, sweetish odor in a heavily infested room, though this usually only shows up once the population has grown.
Bites aren't always reliable on their own
Bite reactions vary a lot from person to person — some people react with itchy welts, often in a line or cluster, while others show no visible reaction at all even with an active infestation nearby. Because of that variability, we don't recommend relying on bites alone to confirm bed bugs. Physical evidence on the mattress, furniture, and baseboards is a more reliable indicator.
Where to check beyond the mattress
- Mattress and box spring seams, especially around the corners
- Headboard attachment points and bed frame joints
- Baseboards and outlet covers near the bed
- Seams of upholstered furniture, especially recliners and couches near sleeping areas
What to do if you find any of these signs
Don't wait to see if it gets worse on its own — bed bugs don't resolve without intervention, and an infestation that's caught early is faster and less disruptive to treat than one that has spread through multiple rooms or units. A professional inspection can confirm what you're dealing with and rule out look-alikes like carpet beetles.
