What Attracts Bed Bugs To An Apartment Or Home?

Bed bugs aren't a sign of a dirty home — they're attracted to people, not mess. They travel by hitchhiking on luggage, furniture, clothing, and secondhand items, and once inside they settle wherever people sleep or sit for long stretches.

What actually draws them in

• Carbon dioxide and body heat. Bed bugs locate hosts by sensing the CO2 we exhale and the warmth we give off, which is why they cluster near beds and couches rather than random parts of a home.
• Secondhand furniture and mattresses. Used items are one of the most common ways bed bugs enter a home in the first place.
• Travel and shared spaces. Hotels, rideshares, and multi-unit buildings all create opportunities for bed bugs to move from one place to another on luggage or clothing.
• Clutter that gives them places to hide. Clutter doesn't attract bed bugs, but it does give them more cracks and folds to hide in once they're already present, which can make an infestation harder to spot early.

Why it isn't about cleanliness

Clean homes and apartments get bed bugs just as often as messy ones. They aren't feeding on crumbs or drawn to food odors — they're feeding on people, so any home with regular human activity is a potential target regardless of how tidy it is.

Reducing the risk

Inspecting secondhand furniture before bringing it inside, checking luggage after travel, and washing clothes on high heat after a trip are reasonable precautions. None of them guarantee prevention, but they lower the odds of an unnoticed introduction.
