Bed Bug Treatment
Do You Have To Leave Your Home During Bed Bug Treatment?
It depends on the treatment method. Some bed bug treatments let you stay close by or return the same day, while others require being out of the home for a set window — the difference mostly comes down to whether heat or chemicals are used.
Heat treatment
Because heat treatment raises the room to a temperature that's unsafe for people to be in, you'll need to be out of the home during the treatment itself — typically for several hours while the room reaches and holds the target temperature. Most people can return once the space has cooled back down, often the same day.
Chemical treatment
Chemical treatments usually require staying out for a shorter window while products are applied and allowed to dry, often just a few hours rather than a full day. Ventilating the room afterward is part of a safe return.
Fumigation is the exception
Whole-home fumigation is the most disruptive option and typically requires being out of the home for a full day or more, since the entire structure is sealed and treated at once. This is usually reserved for severe, widespread infestations rather than a single room.
What to plan for either way
Regardless of method, plan for pets to be out of the home too, and check with your provider about specific instructions for food, plants, and medications before the appointment. Having a plan for where to go for a few hours (or overnight, for fumigation) makes treatment day much less stressful.
The Bottom Line
Heat and chemical treatments usually only require a few hours away from home; fumigation requires longer. Your provider will tell you exactly what to expect for the specific treatment being used in your case.
