Can Bed Bugs Be Treated Without Throwing Everything Away?

One of the most common worries we hear from Portland homeowners and renters is that getting rid of bed bugs means losing a mattress, a couch, or a closet full of clothes. In most cases, that's not true — here's what usually can be saved.

What can typically be saved

• Mattresses and box springs. A mattress encasement, combined with treatment, is usually enough to keep a mattress safe to use rather than replace.
• Furniture. Couches, dressers, and bed frames can generally be treated in place rather than discarded, unless they're structurally damaged or too deteriorated to treat effectively.
• Clothing and linens. Washing and drying on high heat kills bed bugs and eggs, so most fabric items don't need to be thrown out — they need to be laundered correctly.

What sometimes does need to go

Items that are already falling apart, heavily infested, or too porous to treat effectively — think a badly worn upholstered chair with torn seams — are sometimes not worth treating compared to replacing. We'll tell you honestly if something falls into that category rather than charging to treat it anyway.

Why throwing everything away isn't the answer

Discarding furniture without treating the rest of the room doesn't solve the underlying infestation, and it can actually spread bed bugs if items are dragged through hallways or left curbside without being sealed first. Treatment addresses the source; disposal alone doesn't.

What we assess on the visit

During an inspection, we look at each item's condition and the extent of the infestation to tell you specifically what can be treated and kept versus what's better off replaced — not a blanket answer for the whole house.
